ESS and SB Energy Sign Agreement to Deploy Two Gigawatt-hours of Long-Duration Storage
First system shipped to SB Energy site in California
Last week ESS Inc. released details of an agreement with SB Energy to deliver two gigawatt-hours (2 GWh) of our long-duration flow battery systems through 2026.
The first system was shipped to California in September and will be commissioned this month. Our iron flow batteries will complement SB Energy’s expanding portfolio of solar projects in the U.S., contributing to the country’s fastest growing long-duration energy storage market.
“ESS’s unique ability to manufacture and ship batteries using iron,
salt, and water is a game-changer, enabling SB Energy to offer our
customers safe, sustainable and low-cost energy storage today,” said Rich Hossfeld, Co-Chief Executive Officer at SB Energy.

ESS Contracts With Enel Green Power to Deliver 17 Energy Warehouse™ Long-Duration Iron Flow Battery Systems to Project in Spain
The long-duration batteries will be used to support a solar farm in Spain as a part of a broader EU-wide engagement, providing resilience for the local power grid. With a combined capacity of 8.5 MWh, the ESS systems will be among the largest battery storage resources in Spain.

ESS and Munich RE Expand Industry-Leading Warranty Insurance Coverage
ESS recently announced expanded 10-year warranty coverage of our full technology stack by industry leader Munich Re, giving developers, financiers and asset owners long-term performance assurance – and enabling ESS to offer one of the most bankable long-duration energy storage solutions on the market.
The innovative policy provides an extended warranty covering our proprietary flow battery technology and electrolyte management system, supporting the system performance guarantee regardless of project size or location.

Iron Battery Breakthrough Could Eat Lithium’s Lunch
Iron-flow technology from ESS is being deployed at scale in the U.S.
The world’s electric grids are creaking under the pressure of volatile fossil-fuel prices and the imperative of weaning the world off polluting energy sources. A solution may be at hand, thanks to an innovative battery that’s a cheaper alternative to lithium-ion technology.
SB Energy Corp., a U.S. renewable-energy firm that’s an arm of SoftBank Group Corp., is making a record purchase of the batteries manufactured by ESS Inc. The Oregon company says it has new technology that can store renewable energy for longer and help overcome some of the reliability problems that have caused blackouts in California and record-high energy prices in Europe.
“This is a big, big deal,” said Eric Toone, science lead at Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which has invested in ESS.“We’ve been talking about flow batteries forever and ever and now it’s actually happening.”
